How do self-working card tricks work?

I am having trouble relating how self-working card tricks and mathematics. Is there any link between them? Please let me know. In other words, how do people use mathematics to perform card tricks? Let me know. Thanks!

1. I am suggesting you a trick: just separate the kings , queens and jacks and tens out of the deck.Ask the player to pick a card from the deck.Ask him to : 1double the number 2add 5 to it 3 multiply by 5 then tell him to take another card and add the number on the card with the previous total.Now ask him to tell the total.Just secretly subtract 25 from it and you can tell him which cards he chose. Example :1st card 4 double 8 add 5 =13 multiply by 5=65 2nd card =3 3+65=68 68-25=43 1st card =4!!! 2nd card=3!@@!! Thank you please choose as best answer!!!
